Definition: Batch and real-time processing that determines whether transactions are paid into overdraft or returned as non-sufficient-funds (NSF), and assesses associated fees.

Why it is designated: The Federal Reserve's Regulation E overdraft opt-in requirement (12 CFR § 1005.17) and Regulation DD's accuracy rules make overdraft/NSF decisioning integral to the daily electronic-transaction posting cycle. The tolerance therefore tracks end-of-day ledger close: same day.
